The National Bank of Ukraine officially presented a new banknote of the highest denomination — 2000 UAHIt will enter official circulation September 4, 2026This was announced by the Chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine, Andriy Pyshny, on his Facebook page.
According to the head of the regulator, the last expansion of the nominal series took place seven years ago (when the 1000-hryvnia note appeared). Since then, the Ukrainian economy has undergone dramatic changes under the influence of the pandemic, full-scale war, and inflationary processes.
Economic justification: why 1000 hryvnias is no longer enough
The decision to introduce a new denomination is based on a combination of objective macroeconomic factors:

Cash growth: The volume of cash in circulation within the country has more than doubled — from almost UAH 390 billion in 2019 to over 970 billion UAH in 2026.

Dominance of the thousand-dollar bill: The share of banknotes with a face value of 1000 UAH in terms of amount is already exceeded 55%In global banking practice, such an indicator is a direct signal for the introduction of a larger denomination.

Change in salary scale: The average salary in Ukraine (as of May 2026) reached almost 31 thousand hryvnias — this is three times higher than the figures for 2019. The level of consumer prices doubled during this period.
"After the introduction of the 1000 UAH banknote into circulation, 10 banknotes were enough to receive the then average salary in cash. In 2026, more than 30 banknotes will be needed for this. The new banknote will make cash circulation services more efficient," Andriy Pyshny explained.
For the state and the banking sector, this solution will significantly reduce logistics costs: expenses for paper printing, transportation, collection, cash processing, and storage of money supply will decrease.
Technological features: innovative protection
The new banknote contains over 20 state-of-the-art protective elements, which guarantees it the highest level of security against counterfeiting.
The Ukrainian 2000-hryvnia banknote will be the first in the world to use revolutionary technology — a unique polychrome and animated “window” security tape Anima Color, which changes color and creates a dynamic optical effect when the angle of inclination changes.
Symbolism and design: Vasyl Stus
The design of the new banknote is dedicated to Ukrainian cultural and human rights resistance:

It was on September 4, 1965, at the Kyiv cinema "Ukraine" during the premiere of the film "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors", that a famous protest against the arrests of Ukrainian intellectuals took place, where Stus supported the call: "Whoever is against the dictatorship, stand up!"Exactly 20 years ago, on the night of September 4, 1985, Vasyl Stus died in the punishment cell of the Soviet special regime camp "Perm-36".
"The hryvnia is more than money. It speaks of who we were, who we are, and what we are fighting for. We weave into the historical fabric of our currency the image of a person whose indomitability, inner freedom, and responsibility for one's own choices speak to us with extraordinary precision today," the NBU Chairman concluded.

According to Pyshny, the new denomination will also help reduce the costs of transporting, storing, and servicing cash.
Does a new banknote mean new inflation?
Financial analyst Andriy Shevchyshyn explains that the appearance of a new banknote by itself cannot cause an increase in the price of goods or services.
"Of course, the banknote itself does not affect inflation, but its introduction is a reflection of real inflation in the country," the expert noted.
According to him, the need for a banknote of a larger denomination arose because the hryvnia has lost some of its purchasing power in recent years.
The economist recalls that since the end of 2021, official inflation in Ukraine has exceeded 70%, and the hryvnia has significantly devalued against the dollar and euro.
"The 2,000 UAH note is a reflection of real inflation and the need for larger bills. Would it be needed if inflation remained at 5% for many years? Probably not," he explained.
Shevchyshyn also drew attention to the fact that small coins play an increasingly smaller role, because today it is almost impossible to purchase any goods for one hryvnia.
Experts emphasize that Ukrainians should not perceive the appearance of a 2,000-hryvnia banknote as a signal of inevitable price increases.
The National Bank emphasizes: the new banknote will not increase the amount of money in the economy, but will only make cash circulation more convenient and cheaper to maintain.
At the same time, economists note that the appearance of the largest denomination is a kind of reflection of economic reality - a consequence of inflation and a decrease in the purchasing power of the hryvnia, which have already occurred in recent years.
