A grand celebration of the 106th anniversary of the legendary capital market will take place on Tuesday, July 3, at 16:00 p.m. The program of the event includes an orchestral show, an exhibition of archival photos of the construction of the Bessarabian market, and a solemn awarding ceremony for the winner of the competition for the best slogan for the Bessarabian market. This was reported in the Department of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development.

The organizers of the holiday have also prepared pleasant surprises for both regular customers and tourists visiting the market.

"The Bessarabian market is not just a place of trade, but also an important cultural heritage of Kyiv with its rich and interesting history. Therefore, it is our task to promote the tourist attractiveness of the market, using the possibilities of its functional purpose," the company says.

We remind you that until July 1, everyone could submit their proposals for the best slogan for the Bessarabian market. According to the conditions of the contest, the slogan had to reflect the activity of the enterprise and its importance as an object of cultural heritage for Kyiv, as well as consist of one sentence within 5-7 words. According to the estimates of the organizers of the contest - the management of KP "Bessarabian Market" - more than 500 proposals were submitted for consideration by the expert commission.

The author of the best version will be awarded during the official ceremony celebrating the anniversary of the legendary market of the capital.

Bessarab market (Bessarabka) is a covered (under the roof) market with a trading area of 896 m². on Bessarabska Square at the western end of Khreshchatyk in Kyiv. It was built in 1910-1912 with the money of the famous sugar factory Lazar Brodsky, designated by him for this purpose in his will.

The architect is Henryk Guy. The project was carried out by architect Mykhailo Bobrusov. The sculptural decoration was performed by students of the Ukrainian sculptor Fyodor Balavensky, who studied at the Kyiv Art School: Tetyana Rudenko-Schelkan[1] (decorative panel on the facade), and A. Teremets (high-relief "Peasant with oxen" and a decorative image of geese on a metal gate), Petro Snytkin (Molochnytsia high-relief).

The ceremonial opening of the market in the presence of the top management of the city and region took place on July 3 (16), 1912.

Historians still do not have a single version regarding the name of the market. Many believe that it owes its name to being brought from the southern provinces, in particular, from Bessarabia. Others share the view of the 1th-century Kyiv historian-priest Peter Lebedyntsev, who claimed that the local "bosyaks" were called "Bessarabia" in the first third of the XNUMXth century. The Bosyaks allegedly found refuge on the then southwestern outskirts of Kyiv, and therefore it was nicknamed "Bessarabka".
