The capital plans to receive additional generation capacity of 200 MW by the end of the year – this is more than what the Darnytsia CHP produced before the damage. This was stated by the mayor Vitaliy Klitschko, commenting on the restoration of thermal power capacities after an extraordinary session of the Kyiv City Council. According to the mayor, these are gas turbine units, the installation of which has already been partially delayed due to bureaucratic procedures. Klitschko emphasized that cogeneration should insure the city's critical infrastructure in the event of new strikes. At the same time, he admitted that some of the time for the project's implementation has already been lost.
The mayor clarified that the issue concerns cogeneration facilities - one of the key elements of the Resilience Plan that Kyiv is implementing in preparation for the heating season. Klitschko thanked the deputies for the prompt vote, as delaying decisions would mean Kyiv would be unprepared for winter.
“We are already purchasing cogeneration units. Their manufacture and installation takes time, and some of it has been lost due to bureaucratic delays. Our task is to have them installed and operating by the end of the year,” said Vitaliy Klitschko, Mayor of Kyiv.
The mayor added that most of the gas turbine equipment will have level two protection. He explained that the cogeneration facilities were created specifically to insure the city's critical infrastructure in the event of new attacks on the power system.
"Cogeneration facilities are a direction that was created to insure our critical infrastructure. We plan to put into operation the appropriate equipment of 200 MW gas turbine plants by the end of the year," Klitschko added.
"We must do in six months what has been built for decades. We are doing everything to ensure that heat, water, and electricity supply work in the winter. But we also count on the support of the state, because it is very difficult to implement such large-scale projects on our own," the mayor emphasized.
He added that Kyiv is fulfilling its part of the commitments under the Resilience Plan and expects the government to have an equally clear action plan. In addition, journalists asked about the financing of the "Defender of Kyiv" program - the planned UAH 2 billion will be distributed as funds arrive in the city budget, although this year's amount to support the military will be smaller due to expenses for preparing for the heating season.
