August and September are not only the last warm days, but also the period of active flowering of ragweed. This plant is known for its pollen being one of the most common seasonal allergens that can bother many Kyiv residents. To minimize discomfort, municipal enterprises responsible for green spaces have intensified inspections of urban areas and are constantly eliminating detected foci of this plant.
Where does ragweed most often hide?
As reported by the Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Change Adaptation of the Kyiv City State Administration, ragweed likes to grow where it is not cared for: along roads, in wastelands, near industrial zones, construction sites and other uncultivated areas. It is quite fond of the urban environment, so the plant quickly adapts and spreads in open areas.
What does the fight against ragweed look like in practice?
The main method of control used by municipal workers is mechanical. Plants are mowed, and most importantly, removed with the roots to prevent re-emergence. In some cases, where it is safe and appropriate, special preparations can be used. It is very important to destroy ragweed before it has time to form seeds. After all, one plant can give rise to numerous new foci next year. Therefore, Kyiv municipal workers work systematically, localizing and destroying ragweed throughout the season.
Important advice from the Department: Do not try to pull out or mow large ragweed clumps yourself during flowering. This can spread pollen and only make things worse for allergy sufferers.
If you notice ragweed in your yard or private area, it is best to remove it with the roots before it starts flowering. This will help prevent the appearance of seeds.

What is ragweed?
