On the eve of the start of the new school year, Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko took part in a traditional conference of the capital's educators. He emphasized that this year 361,000 children and young people will study at 1018 educational institutions - schools, kindergartens and universities. In particular, more than 16,000 first-graders will sit at their desks for the first time.
Safety comes first
Vitaliy Klitschko emphasized that the main priority of the city authorities remains the safety of students and teachers. The city is systematically working to improve the condition of shelters and the energy supply of educational institutions.
Shelter and energy sustainability
- The total number of places in shelters at educational institutions in the capital reached 375,000, which is 170,000 more than in 2022.
- Backup lighting, power sources, and ventilation systems are installed in these shelters.
- 393 schools already have Wi-Fi in shelters.
- In 2024-2025, 9 dual-purpose buildings were built in educational institutions.
- 847 educational institutions are equipped with generators, and 210 with inverters with batteries. The city aims to provide all educational institutions with additional energy sources.
Safe Educational Environment Program
The capital continues to implement the program "Creating a Safe Educational Environment", which includes:
- Physical security of all schools.
- Presence of panic buttons.
- 24-hour remote security.
- Video surveillance and alarm systems.
- Swedish Internet.
Restoration of damaged facilities
The city authorities are also working to restore educational institutions damaged by enemy attacks. Since the start of the full-scale war, 314 institutions have been damaged, 107 of them in 2026. 205 facilities have already been restored, and work is ongoing on 109 more.
Gratitude to educators
Vitaliy Klitschko noted that over 62,500 specialists work in Kyiv's educational institutions. He expressed deep respect for the 40 educators who died defending Ukraine, and thanked all teachers for their professionalism, dedication, and faith in the country.
At the end of the conference, the mayor presented the Mayor's Gratitude to the 9 best teachers in the city and the parents of the three most successful students-winners of the Olympiads.
