Count Albert is in love with a peasant girl, Giselle, who thinks he is a peasant. When the truth about his origins is revealed, Giselle goes mad and dies.
In the second act, the willies, spirits of dead girls, force everyone who appears in the cemetery to dance. Giselle forgives Albert, but he is in danger from the willies, who demand that he dance until he dies.
Only with the first ray of sunlight do the willies lose their power and Albert is saved. This performance is a masterpiece of ballet romanticism, embodying the ideas of deep love that conquers even death.
