The Kyiv authorities are preparing the groundwork for increasing the cost of subway travel. Due to the metro's chronic unprofitability, they plan to revise the current fare of 8 hryvnias in the near future.
Forecasts and economic justification
Experts note that the metro requires significant financial investments for stable operation. Every year, the city subsidizes transport in the amount of about $ 12 billion.
-
Growth forecast: 1,5–2 times.
-
Expected price: from 12 to 16 hryvnias for one trip.
-
Expert opinion: Oleksandr Sergienko emphasizes that the twofold increase is necessary to compensate for the increase in the cost of electricity and spare parts.
The situation with other transport in Kyiv
The metro remains the "cheapest" mode of transport, as prices for other routes have already increased in March 2026:
| Type of transport | New price (March 2026) | Features |
| Marshrutki | 20 UAH | Increased from 15 UAH |
| City train | 19,2 – 22 UAH | Through the terminal/cashier |
| City train | 15 UAH | Through digital applications |
| Metro (now) | 8 UAH | When purchasing 50 trips — 6,50 UAH |
Comparison with other cities in Ukraine
Kyiv currently has one of the lowest prices among cities with a paid subway:
-
Dnipro: the cost of the trip is 10 UAHTravel passes are available for 900 UAH (student passes — 450 UAH).
-
Kharkiv: the fare remains free of charge until the end of martial law (city council decision).
What does this mean for passengers?
A review of metro fares seems inevitable after the increase in prices for private carriers and the city train. The authorities promise to maintain a system of discounts for Kyiv residents' card holders and when replenishing trips through "Kyiv Digital".
Importantly: In addition to urban transport, fares for suburban minibuses are also increasing, which forces residents of the agglomeration (Bucha, Irpin, Brovary) to plan their logistics budget in advance.
