At the "E" Bookstore at the Golden Gate will kick-off presentation and discussion of Josyf Opatos's landmark novel "In the Polish Forests", published by Tempora Publishing House.

This is a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of the turbulent 1860s, where the personal journey of the main character Mordhe is intertwined with the mysticism of Hasidic courts and the barricades of the Polish uprising. The book opens up to the reader a little-known layer of Yiddish literature, which is an integral part of our common cultural landscape.

What will be discussed at the meeting:

  • How modernist literature in this language developed and what place does Yosyf Opatoshu occupy in it?
  • What challenges do researchers and translators face in bringing these texts closer to the modern Ukrainian reader?
  • How historical fractures influence the formation of personality and the making of fateful decisions.

Speakers of the evening:

  • Tetyana Nepypenko is a researcher of Yiddish literature, translator, and literary critic.
  • Nika Chulaevska is the editor-in-chief of Tempora Publishing House, a philologist.
