National Bank of Ukraine informed about the reduction in the number of banknotes of some denominations, their active replacement with larger bills and coins, as well as an increase in demand for high-value banknotes. The largest reduction was recorded for banknotes with a denomination of 200 hryvnia - their number decreased by 24,5%.

This is due to the replacement with 1000 hryvnia banknotes and the withdrawal of old ones from circulation. The number of 10 and 5 hryvnia banknotes has also significantly decreased (by 15% and 11%, respectively), as they are gradually being replaced by coins.

In the face of a full-scale invasion, citizens prefer to keep their savings in large denomination banknotes, which explains the growing popularity of 1000-hryvnia banknotes. At the same time, 500-hryvnia banknotes remain the most common in circulation, accounting for 27,3% of the total. Among coins, the 10-kopeck denomination is the leader (27,8%), while 50-hryvnia and  coins 10 hryvnias are the least popular.

The total amount of cash in circulation increased by 7,6% (58 billion hryvnias) and reached 822,4 billion hryvnias as of January 1, 2025. Of this amount, coins account for 7,96 billion hryvnias. In terms of currency, there are 63 banknotes and 186 coins per inhabitant of the country, which is less than in 2024, when the figures were 66 and 177, respectively.

The National Bank notes that the growth rate of cash circulation remained moderate and corresponded to the level of 2023. This indicates that Ukrainians and businesses are gradually adapting to the economic realities of the war.
